The 4 Rules of Gun Safety Every Owner Must Know

Firearms ownership comes with a serious responsibility, and safety must always be the top priority, whether you’re at the range, in the field, or at home. At Basalt Firearms, we believe that responsible gun ownership starts with a clear understanding of the universal rules of firearm safety. These four foundational principles are simple, but they must be followed without exception. They’re not just guidelines, they’re habits that every shooter, from first-timers to lifelong professionals, must commit to every time they handle a gun.

The first rule is to treat every firearm as if it’s loaded. Even if you believe the gun is unloaded, even if you just saw someone clear it, act as though it’s ready to fire. This mindset helps eliminate complacency and creates a culture of caution and awareness. It’s not about paranoia,it’s about preventing accidents before they have a chance to happen.

Second, never point a gun at anything you are not willing to destroy. This means always controlling your muzzle direction, whether you’re picking up a pistol from a case or slinging a rifle over your shoulder. Accidental discharges do happen, and where that muzzle is pointing can be the difference between a harmless scare and a tragic mistake.

Third, you must keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you’re ready to shoot. This rule prevents unintentional discharges caused by flinching, slipping, or simply being startled. Rest your finger along the frame or slide, not the trigger guard, until you’ve made the conscious decision to fire.

Lastly, be sure of your target and what’s beyond it. Bullets don’t stop on impact, they keep going. Whether you’re at the range or defending your home, it’s your responsibility to know exactly what you’re shooting at, what’s behind it, and whether there’s any chance of hitting something, or someone, you didn’t intend to.

At Basalt Firearms, these four rules are at the heart of every training course we teach. Safety isn’t something you learn once,it’s something you practice every single time you handle a firearm. When followed together, these rules create a strong foundation of respect, awareness, and accountability that every gun owner should carry for life.
