Federal Firearms
License Transfers
A Federal Firearms License (FFL) transfer is the legal process that allows individuals to purchase or sell firearms across state lines through licensed dealers.
Whether you’re buying a firearm online, receiving one as a gift, or transferring ownership, federal law requires that the transfer be completed through an FFL holder to ensure proper documentation and a background check.
What Is an
FFL Transfer?
An FFL transfer occurs when a firearm is shipped from one FFL dealer to another, typically to complete a sale to a private individual.
The receiving dealer performs a background check (via NICS) and logs the firearm into their records before legally transferring it to the buyer. This process helps ensure compliance with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) regulations.
